 What You’ll Need:
Felt
Thread
Embroidery floss
Craft Glue
Any embellishments you wish to add (buttons, beads, sequins, etc.)
 Instructions:
Using an old piece of newspaper, cut out a template in the shape of a sock. Cut out a front and back piece.
Lay the template over the felt and cut out the front and back pieces.
Sew the stocking together, leaving the top open with a ¼ inch seam allowance.
Either blanket stitch around the edges of the stocking with embroidery floss, or use textured sewing scissors to trim the edges.
Cut a 3 inch by ½ inch strip of felt and attach it (preferably by sewing, vs. gluing for a stronger hold) to the top corner of the stocking.
Use craft glue to attach embellishments to the front of the stocking. You can also use felt or embroidery floss to add a name or initials to the stocking.

YAK Apparel
"Oh, the weather outside is frightful…” You hear the words to that holiday song and immediately picture cold, frosty winds and snow all around you. Which is perfectly fine when you’re indoors, it’s just that when you’re outside it’s miserable!
You know you have to bundle up, but who wants to look like Ralphie from A Christmas Story? YAK Apparel’s winter hats are cheerfully printed bundles of cuteness that keep your head warm, your hair protected by nasty weather while it does good at the same time.
You see, everything that’s created for YAK Apparel is made in Nepal. Marion Surette and Sanjay Ranjit co-founded the line back in 2009. They met at an M.I.T. Entrepreneurial event. At the time Marion was importing handbags from Italy, and Sanjay was exploring the idea of importing items from Nepal. As she says, “I guess we are both Entrepreneurs to the core.”
Between their trip to Kathmandu (Sanjay’s home town) his mother visiting them in Boston, the reactions of their friends when they saw the hand-knitted hats, mittens and scarves, they just knew that YAK Apparel had to be born.
YAK apparel hats are definitely adorable (and warm) but one of the things that make YAK Apparel so different from other companies is that they were founded upon the ideals of sustainability and Fair Wage.
As Marion told us, “YAK Apparel was created because we wanted to support Nepal as a country and its people and at the same time we realized from the reaction of friends and family that everybody loved the hats, mittens and hand warmers his Mom had brought. So it grew naturally. I think people responded to the fact that these items were real: real wool, made by real people, they were based in the authenticity of the earflap hat which is a century old design.”
Each item is lovingly made by hand from artisans in Nepal. YAK Apparel is based in Boston. So there has to be a bunch of emails flying back and forth when they design them, right? And who decides a hat’s going to be pink or have a pom-pom? Marion let us in on how the design process works.

Hand-made in Nepal, these knitted wonders are the perfect gift to give and get.

Yak pom pom
“The design process is very much driven by the creativity of the women who make the hats. Our design team here considers its role (is) to infuse some of our fashion trends into the product.
"For example, that’s how our fur pom-pom hats came to life. We fused the designs of the artisans in Nepal with what we knew to be a strong trend here and in Europe. Namely, fur accents.
"We chose to use faux-fur because we wanted to be people AND animal friendly.
Historically Nepal has been a niche for artists and creativity. Most of the historic towns are nothing less than an art studio, filled with intricate/sophisticated monuments, sculptures and buildings.”
Lately, you hear terms like “sustainability,” “Fair Trade,” and “Fair Wage” banded about all the time. But what does it really mean? What exactly is a “sustainable good?” Marion kindly explained what it is and how it fuses with YAK Apparel’s sensibilities.
She told us, “Creating sustainable items simply grows out of how you do business and what philosophical base line you have as a business.
Sanjay's desire is to help the country he is from is one baseline for YAK Apparel. And the best way he can do that is by building a successful business here which generates a consistent need for products ‘Made in Nepal.’
Sanjay travels to Nepal frequently, he knows all the people we work with personally. He also has a family history of apparel manufacturing in Nepal, so he understands what it takes to manufacture and to maintain a productive labor force. He has seen all the places where our hats are made. Sanjay’s met artisans' families and shared meals with them. It is very much a personal thing.
Beyond that, our focus is to stay with authenticity and natural materials, because we believe in quality. A product that really performs for our customer and sustaining the world we live in.
We know for example, that natural wool keeps you a lot warmer than a synthetic blend. So we don't use synthetic wool blends. We also know that wool can be itchy--so we make sure there is a lining in the hats to keep you comfortable. Once you have a baseline what you stand for, the choices and decisions are pretty straight forward.
We speak to the people who also have that philosophy. Our goal is to provide products for people who understand and value authentic, natural and sustainable. You can be all that AND have a sense of fashion.
So basically it is driven by what we as the people who run the company are and believe, and encouraged by all those who purchase our products.”

YAK head wrap
Their hats are very adorable. And who doesn’t wear a hat in winter? We wanted to know what to look for when buying one. Marion explained by stating, “Our tag line ‘Y.A.K.--You Are on of a Kind.’ It encourages everyone to be who they are.
"The fact that we have thousands of varieties, designs and color combinations that allows people to pick what works for them.
"And that is a result of the fact that every hat is made by hand and that we encourage creativity among the artisans who make them. We have seen everything from customers looking to match their winter coat, their hair color, their eye color to people wanting natural earthy colors because they felt simple is beautiful or a customer simply picking her favorite color.
"Natural Beauty - that's our motto. And be yourself. If it works for you - it's beautiful!”
If you’re buying a hat as a present, Marion says to keep these things in mind: “Think about where the person you buying for may wear the hat. Will she wear it on her walk to the office on cold winter days or to go snowboarding?
"That may influence the style and color choices you make. Better yet, buy one for yourself and one as a gift and make plans to wear them doing something fun together!”
If you’ve ever had a winter hat that got wrecked—and it’s always your fave hat—there are some tips on hat care that Marion wanted to pass on.
“Wool is very rugged. It doesn't need a lot of care. Make sure you let it dry well if it gets wet. Try not to stain it too much because you can't toss it in the washing machine. You can spot clean it with soap and water.
"If you have a faux-fur lined hat, then you can take a regular hair brush and brush the fur every once in awhile.”
Since we’re talking about the holidays, we couldn’t resist asking Marion what she wanted Santa to bring her this year. She said, “Lots of snow and a very cold winter!”

YAK Apparel – Winter Trapper Hat Product Review

YAK Apparel – Winter Trapper Hat Product Review
yaklogo

"You Are one of a Kind."

Want to know the first word that comes to mind when I think of winter? "Yuck." I'm not a snow bunny by any means. In fact, let me live my entire life in Bora Bora and I'll be happy as a clam. But, living in Maine it is impossible to skip winter, and I have to make the best of it. Guess I'll just have to keep dreaming about the beach while I spend my cold, snowy days in legit hibernation. This year, to spice things up a bit on those rare occasions that I have to venture from the warmth of my home, I'm making winter more fun with a YAK Apparel Winter Trapper Hat that I was sent to try out.
I've always wanted a trapper hat. There's something about the warmth of them, the unique styling, and the overall fashion atrocity that I actually quite adore. I have a friend who calls trapper hats, "mad bomber hats", which I find absolutely hilarious. And, when you think about it, everyone wears the same thing: beanies, berets, those weird ear handband things, ski masks, and ear muffs. (They still make those, right?) No, thank you. When I go out in winter, I want to look like I live in a cabin 10 miles into the woods. There are only two places on my body that I like to go a little crazy with when it comes to accessories. Give me a fabulous quirky pair of shoes, and a cute random hat.
YAK Apparel's hats are handmade from natural, sustainable materials and real wool. The one tidbit of information that really jumped out at me was that YAK Apparel's products are made by women in a true cottage industry that helps support Nepali families. I'm quite partial to Nepal (visited and traveled around for a month), so even though it's not "USA Made", it's great to see that YAK Apparel supports people in developing countries.
"YAK Apparel is a Boston-based clothing and accessories company specializing in wool hats and silk scarves handmade in Nepal. We founded Yak in 2009, after a trip to Nepal in which we discovered talented artisans crafting beautiful, colorful wool hats by hand.
When we started working with the Artisans who make our product in Kathmandu and the surrounding villages, we were struck by the sense of color and the incredible creativity everyone brought to the table. The women who knitted our hats literally designed them on the fly – they knew exactly what colors to pick, how to combine them and how to incorporate them into the most intricate designs." ~ YAK Apparel
As I mentioned previously, YAK Apparel sent their (grey) Winter Trapper Hat for me to try out. Thankfully we haven't had a blizzard so I've been able to wear it out for fun, and not for its usefulness. The Winter Trapper Hat is really beautiful and I LOVE it. It was just what I was looking for. (I've been looking for an awesome trapper hat for about 3 years now.) The inside is lined with a soft, quilted fleece, and the ear flaps, front, and back are lined with soft multi-toned faux fur which really gives it a "real" look. The hat overall feels like quality, and I love how thick the wool outer is.
Features:
  • great warm Russian style hat
  • natural wool ensures perfect warmth and comfort
  • full faux-fur and fleece lining
  • perfect for work and play
  • spot clean only
  • one size fits most
I know the color description says this hat is grey, but it's definitely more of a tan. The fleece lining is grey, and the the majority of the faux fur is grey, but the wool outer is a dusty tan. I'm not complaining. I had a hard time deciding if I wanted to go with the grey, or the beige, and last minute changed my mind to the grey. I think this would be stunning if it was actually grey, but I REALLY like the tan. Although YAK Apparel makes hats for men, women, and children, I did find that the women's Trapper Hat was a little small, hence the "one size fits most". This doesn't surprise me since my mother likes to remind me of how large my head was as a child. "I couldn't get sweaters on over your head unless it had buttons or a zipper. You had such a big head!" (Thanks, mother.) It actually fits my head perfectly, but there's no additional wiggle room which means I can't wear my hair up if I wanted to. I also think the ear flaps don't quite lay flat on the side of my head because it's just a bit small. This is just for reference, especially if you are part of the Big Head Club. "Hi. My name is _____, and I have a big head."
The only thing I actually really didn't care for, was the strings that hang down from the ear flaps. They kind of curl, and do their own thing, and the tip is just simply knotted. But, YAK Apparel has another version of this hat with pompoms at the end of the strings, which I think I like a little bit better.
Overall, I love the hat, and I really like the selection that YAK Apparel offers. I'll definitely be sporting my hat all through the blustery wind and swirling snow, and my head will be WARM. Make sure you check out YAK Apparel Online, and on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest!

Your hat will be completely one of kind because it is handmade! As you can tell, I love my beanie. I chose black and white because I have a lot of b&w in my closet and will be able to mix it with everything. Up next, I’m looking to print mix! :)
Also, ever since I received this necklace from Anjolee, I’ve been wearing it nonstop with my Rory necklace. As I’ve said before, this season I’ve been more into delicate jewelry, unlike last winter when I loved statement, chunky necklaces. Well, these two more delicate necklaces go PERFECT together. YAK Apparel red orange earflap pompom trapper hat
We have already had about a handful of below-freezing nights, as well as our first dusting of snow here in northeastern Pennsylvania. Nothing major yet, but just enough to make us realize that winter will be here in full-force before we know it. When you live in a northern state such as Pennsylvania, winter hats are a necessity, and I was fortunate enough to receive a brand new winter hat from YAK Apparel.
A Boston-based apparel and accessories company specializing in wool hats and silk scarves, YAK Apparel works directly with talented artisans in Nepal, providing them with sustainable, fair wage employment, to bring their products to more than 2,000 stores (and counting!) in the United States alone. Created with natural wool, fleece, and faux fur, YAK Apparel’s hats are made from natural, sustainable materials, which is so important to anyone passionate about being kind to the planet.
wearing YAK Apparel red orange earflap pompom trapper hat
There are so many great colors and styles of hats to choose from, and I ultimately decided on the red/orange earflap pom-pom trapper hat. I am absolutely thrilled with this hat! The red, orange, and browns make it perfect for chilly fall days, but the faux fur lining and accents around the front of the hat and in the pom-poms bring it right into winter.
The faux fur pom-poms on the top of the hat and at the bottom of the tassels that hang on either side are super cute without it coming off as being a child’s hat. The weight of it as well as the lining and earflaps keep your ears and head warm and toasty, even on very cold nights, and it’s very comfortable.
In addition to the awesome pom-pom trapper hats like the one I received, YAK Apparel also has head wraps, beanies, fleece-lined hats, and other variations of faux fur-lined hats with tassels for both women and men.

Giveaway

One lucky Woman Tribune reader will win their choice of winter hat from YAK Apparel. This giveaway will end November 24th. To enter use the Rafflecopter form below.

I received a winter hat from YAK Apparel for review, as well as the opportunity to host this giveaway. No other compensation was received, and opinions are my own.

No-Bake Thanksgiving Treats

No-Bake Thanksgiving Treats

Hello Yak fans – happy Tuesday! Ready for some more Thanksgiving fun? Today we’ve got two really fun treats you can make for Thanksgiving that not only require less than a handful of ingredients each – but they don’t require any time in the oven! They’re perfect for last minute desserts, fun place settings, or crafts with the kids. Check ‘em out!
Candy Corn on the Cob (Photo by istolethetv)
Candy Corn on the Cob (Photo by istolethetv)
 1. Candy Corn on the Cob
Despite the name, this sweet corn treat is made of reeses pieces, not candy corn. It’s super simple to make too. All you’ll need are some green fruit rollups, a rectangular cookie (any variety will do!), white frosting and some reeses pieces. Use a sharp knife to cut the cookie into the shape of a corn cob (doesn’t have to be perfect, just taper the top of the rectangle), than wrap the bottom portion of the rectangle in fruit rollup, peeling the top down to look like half shucked corn. Next spread frosting over the top portion of the cookie and cover with reeses pieces. Enjoy!
Oreo Cookie Turkey (photo by homemaking)
Oreo Cookie Turkey (photo by homemaking)
2. Oreo Cookie Turkey
Not a fan of traditional turkey? Try this sweeter version made from oreo cookies and reeses. Start with an oreo (we prefer double stuffed) and use white frosting to “glue” the bottoms of two candy corns to the top of the oreo. Next attach a reeses peanut butter cup just behind the candy corns, and another oreo just behind the reeses. Attach a whopper to the top of the reeses cup as the head. You can use and white and black frosting to draw eyes on your turkey, and additional candy corns for the nose, wings and feathers – and voila – an oreo cookie turkey!
Do you have any fun Thanksgiving treats you like to make? Share your favorite recipes with us on Facebook!
