What better way to celebrate the witching hour than with a trip to Salem, MA – home of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692, and featured in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. This spooky city is just outside of Boston and is literally brimming with fun Halloween happenings.

If you love all things spooky:
Check out the 3D haunted house. This incredible tour takes you though a super-spooky haunted house that is covered (walls and floor) with 3D effects that are brought to life with special glasses. Haunted actors are also throughout the house ready to spook you – so you never know if what’s jumping out at you is real or 3D! The haunted house is right downtown and is open October 5^th through the 31^st. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7.00 for kids and are available for sale here.

If you’re into the history:
Head on over to the Salem Witch Museum at Salem Common. The Salem Witch Museum is home to many artifacts of the 1962 Witch Trials and is full of stories to educate both children and adults alike. It’s open year round with extended hours during October.
You can also relive the witch trials like you were there – Cry Innocent: The People vs. Bridget Bishop is a live reenactment of the witch trials – and you get to be the jury. Dirty Martini

The Dirty Martini is a classic variation of the original Martini. It is called dirty because of the olive brine, which adds a more olive flavoring than the straight Martini with olives soaking in it. Go easy on olive brine and you will have one of the best cocktails ever.
Prep Time: 3 minutes
Total Time: 3 minutes
Yield: 1 Cocktail
Ingredients:
•    2 1/2 oz gin
•    1/2 oz dry vermouth
•    olive brine to taste
•    olive for garnish
Preparation:
1.    Pour the gin and dry vermouth into a mixing glass with ice.
2.    Slowly add the olive brine.
3.    Stir.
4.    Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
5.    Garnish with the olive.

How to Carve a Pumpkin

With Halloween right around the corner, here at Yak we’re getting pretty excited about one of our most favorite Halloween time activities – pumpkin carving! With all the crazy elaborate pumpkins you see on TV and in magazines, it can make pumpkin carving seem pretty intimidating. But the reality is it’s actually pretty easy – and requires only a few supplies. Below is a step-by-step tutorial for carving a basic Jack-O-Lantern. 1. Pick out a perfect pumpkin! The perfect pumpkin isn’t always round, or free of abrasions. Sometimes those little imperfections can be a part of your pumpkin design!

2. Spill its Guts! In order to light up your pumpkin from the inside, you first have to clean it out. Using a sharp knife, cut a circle around the stem of the pumpkin and carefully remove the top. Than use a spoon to scoop out the inside “guts” and seeds. (Don’t forget, you can clean and roast the seeds in the oven for a delicious AND healthy Halloween treat!)

3. Draw the Face. Now it’s time to create your Jack-O-Lantern’s face. Using a marker, trace and then cut out two eyes, a nose and a mouth. If this is your first pumpkin carving experience use big, solid shapes likes triangles and squares, which are easier to cut. As you get more comfortable carving, you can try smaller, more intricate designs.

4. Light ‘er Up! Your pumpkin is almost finished….all that’s left to do is place a small candle (we recommend a battery powered fake candle to avoid any chance of fire) inside the pumpkin, replace the top part with the stem, and light it up. Once it gets dark your pumpkin’s face will illuminate!
