Throughout the past year, trapper hats, also known as Russian hats, bomber hats, or Ushanka hats, have exploded in popularity. Popping up all over runways, celebrity magazines, ski slopes and sidewalks – trapper hats have quickly become a fashion must-have. However, the stylish winter hats weren’t always so trendy – they were originally designed to keep the heads of hunters, trappers, nomads and outdoorsmen warm during frigid winter conditions in the arctic and Scandinavian regions.
The first trapper hats were made of leather and were lined with either rabbit fur or fox fur, both of which are known for their warmth. The hats were designed to cover the necks and ears of the hunters, and helped to prevent frostbite. The trapper hat wasn’t worn as a fashion statement until the early nineteen hundreds, when it was adopted by Siberian leader Aleksandr Kolchak and his White Army during the Russian civil war. After Kolchak’s crew lost the war, the hat was incorporated into the winter uniform of the Soviet Union’s Red Army – hence the trapper hat’s association with Russia, and the name “Russian hats.”
Today’s trapper hats are strikingly similar to the original design, with the exception of the materials used. Most trapper hats today are made out of wool, or synthetic materials such as nylon or polyester, and are lined with fleece or faux fur. While not exactly the same as the original hats, modern trapper hats are still extremely functional in winter weather, and have become popular amongst skiers and snowboarders for their ability to protect the ears, cheeks and neck from harsh winds. Trapper hats are also very popular in locations such as Alaska, where temperatures frequently drop well below zero degrees, as well as cities such as Chicago and New York, were chilly winter temperatures and an affinity for style come together in the perfect storm for a functional and stylish hat.
